Oxford English Dictionary, OED, Version 2.0 - How to install the OED to your hard drive

Please note: These instructions are for the version 2.0 product. Version 2.0 is no longer the current version. If you use version 2.0 frequently you may want to upgrade to version 3.0 for the following reasons:
  • It installs to disk as part of the normal installation process.
  • It does not require you to verify the CD every time you start it the way version 2.0 does. Instead you only have to do this every 90 days.
  • It also has better search capabilities.
  • It includes the three addendum volumes.
  • Nicer interface.
For all the information on this click here.

The following instructions are from Oxford University Press and allow you to access the entire OED from your hard drive. This is faster than using the CD in the CD drive all of the time. However, when the program first starts up you do still have to insert the data disk and wait for it to "authenticate" the CD.

Instructions

Copy the DATA folder from the data disc onto the root of your hard drive, such as C:\ or D:\. This folder contains roughly 600Mb of Data, so this will take a few minutes, depending on the speed of your machine.

When this has copied over, edit the OED.INI file found in the WINDOWS directory. Modify the CD_PATH statement so that it reflects the drive where you copied the DATA folder to (i.e. if you copied the DATA folder to the D: drive, then the CD_PATH statement should be CD_PATH=D:\).

Save the OED.INI file, and restart Windows.

Start the program normally, with the data disc in the drive, and allow the authentication to complete. When the hourglass disappears from the homepage of the program, you can then take the CD out as clicking on the 'Search' button will look towards the hard drive for the data.
