Technical Support & Tips for reference products on CD-Rom
We offer our customers some tips and patches for the products we sell on our website. Patches are from the publishers/manufacturers. Keep in mind that we do not write the software so we are unable to correct any programming problems ourselves and the primary contact for support should be the publisher. We will try to assist you where possible but please contact the publisher first because they have most of the technical data about the product.
On 8 August 2006, Microsoft published an automatic Windows Update KB917422. If you have updated your computer this update has installed on your computer and conflicts with several software programs, including the Oxford English Dictionary for version 3.1 or earlier (not 3.1.1) and the Macmillan Dictionary CD-ROMs. Computers running Windows 2000 and Windows XP are likely to be affected. Microsoft has now made a hot fix called KB924867 which solves this problem.
For the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) the software will not install and will not do the 90 day data disk validation process. If you have version 3.1 contact Oxford tech support (see contacts below) about a free upgrade to 3.1.1. If the installation process failed you need to remove the OED software. Install the patch above and then install the OED again.
If the 90 day validation fails just install the Microsoft patch above and the 90 day validation process should work just fine.
For the MACMILLAN Dictionary just install the patch and it should work. However, MACMILLAN has also made available free online access in case you have a problem for more information go to http://www.macmillandictionary.com/aboutcdfaq.htm
