Oxford English Dictionary, OED, Version 2.0
Free patch to allow use with Windows MEPlease note: These instructions are for the version 2.0 product. Version 2.0 is no longer the current version. If you use version 2.0 frequently you may want to upgrade to version 3.0 for the following reasons:
For all the information on this click here.
- It installs to disk as part of the normal installation process.
- It does not require you to verify the CD every time you start it the way version 2.0 does. Instead you only have to do this every 90 days.
- It also has better search capabilities.
- It includes the three addendum volumes.
- Nicer interface.
You can upgrade your OED right away and don't have to wait. We have provided the patch on-line as a service to our customers!
Here is a letter of explanation we obtained from Oxford University Press Technical Support. My thanks to Oxford University Press for allowing us to provide this patch on-line.
Please print this page and then download the patch.

|The OED Version 2.0 software is not native to Windows ME, and requires a patch.|
Please down load the patch using the link below to your hard drive, and then use WinZip to Unzip the contained files directly into the C:\Program Files\OED\OED CD v2\BIN folder (or into the BIN folder in the directory where you installed the OED if you changed the default installation path.) Overwrite all files in this folder when you are prompted to do so. These new program files should allow the program to authenticate properly in Windows ME.
WinZip is a compression agent that is used to compress a set of files for transport over the Internet. If you do not have WinZip installed on your machine, you may download a free version from http://www.winzip.com.
Download the evaluation version and then install it before trying to follow the directions above.
Please note: You should extract the files directly into the BIN folder
without creating a new folder. If, after applying the patch the error
message persists, then check the BIN folder for a folder called OEDME. If this folder exists, then the files were placed incorrectly. Copy the files out of the OEDME folder and place them into the BIN folder.
