Sylmar, CA - You do not have to live near the beach to have clean air.Olive View Medical center in Sylmar, California was originally opened in 1920 as a Tuberculosis Sanitarium were patients could recover in clean air. Clean air? Was that just because Los Angeles was smaller then and the San Fernando valley was not as developed? Or is there something more to this?
There is: Running through Sylmar is the Pacoima creek. It travels between two mountain ridges and is the lowest point in the mountains that form the northern boundary of the San Fernando Valley. As a result clean air from the Angeles National Mountains is constantly flowing into our area. (click on the map) This was confirmed by a dam employee who told me there are strong breezes at the top of the dam. Which is at 2015 feet. The dam is is in a narrow canyon and quite low compared to the mountains on both sides.
